Background: This AMEE Technology Enhanced Learning Committee’s workshop has a focus on Micro-Scholarship, which provides an innovative and proactive approach to the development and presentation of medical educator scholarship. The core feature is the small step-by-step processes to create, collect and collate, and share a wide variety of content. Specific content can be presented as evidence of scholarship and subjected to open peer review. An essential aspect of Micro-Scholarship is reflection and meta-reflection with active engagement in a community of practice. The use of technology, including blogs and social media, can greatly enhance all the activities associated with Micro-Scholarship. This workshop will provide participants with the theoretical background of Micro-Scholarship, the process and potential use of a wide variety of technologies for Micro-Scholarship, and an opportunity to actively plan how they can develop and present their own scholarship of being a medical educator. In addition, participants will develop their approach to meta-reflection and identify supportive communities of practice and mentors.
Who Should Participate: All who are interested in exploring Micro-Scholarship for medical educators
Structure Of Workshop: The workshop will be arranged in four parts with a brief introduction and small group activities.
Part I – What is Micro-Scholarship?
Part 2 – The choice of Technology
Part 3 – The challenges of Micro-Scholarship
Part 4 - Planning to implement Micro-Scholarship
Intended Outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will:
Have an increased awareness of the process and outcomes of Micro-Scholarship
Critically choose technologies for Micro-Scholarship
Develop meta-reflection skills for Micro-Scholarship
Identify appropriate communities of practice and mentors for Micro-Scholarship
- 'finding' and 'engaging' your / an 'audience' and 'readership' - an iterative, and cumulative process
Workshop (Working/Adaptable/Adapted and Customised to Individual Needs and Requests of Participants in 'Live' Workshop Session - What Workshop Participants Want to Discuss, and Do) Timeline:
--
One possible path ...
Similar to my own, and many others 'struggles' with getting started with Scholarship, including 'Micro-Scholarship'
--
Start with brief introductions, including who, why and what - 1) who participants are (their context), 2) why there are attending, and 3) what each participant feels success for themselves would be, to take away from workshop
Then
Explore and ask what participants experience as 'Challenges' to engage with, and start journey as Scholar
Then
Facilitators will 'briefly' present our 'solution' - including 1) what is Micro-Scholarship, and 2) how to engage in Micro-Scholarship - including idea and practices (at this point discuss nuts and bolts) - not only how we do Micro-Scholarship, but what participants could do in their context
and
then get participants to do Micro-Scholarship
first as paper and pen exercise (or Flip Chart exercise)
then using simple note taking, and note sharing and conversation 'tech' solutions - my favourites are 1) email, 2) WhatsApp, and 3) Instagram or SlideShare for professional use; and Blogging/Blogger again for professional use
and then
finally, after several rounds of individual, and small group work, and presentation, discussion, Q and A
offer one
step by step path that we, as faculty/workshop facilitators use personally
for myself (Poh-Sun), I engage in 'open digital practice' and 'open digital scholarship' - for the last 10 years - progressively, cumulatively develop, and iteratively refine 'public' 'digital artefacts' and work through open presentation and digital scholarship - through blogs (present directly 'from' blogs, including SlideShare and Instagram - standalone or embedded within blogs)

Specific Activities, How we are going to spend our time in the workshop, Key Messages, Conversations and Takeaways.
- opening introductions - facilitators and participants (see previous section)
- what is Micro-Scholarship - facilitators sharing, then participants pose questions, engage in open discussion with facilitators, followed by time for personal reflection - taking note(s) and making notes
group exercise - two groups - one group facilitated by John, the other group by Poh-Sun
choose one topic (by group), that 'all' in group are interested in, engage in online 'research' into topic - its key ideas, key words, definitions, key publications - what is widely read (will appear on first page(s) of online search on Google), what is widely cited, including reviews; and then examine key parts of these publications - specifically answering question what are components and pieces of 'Micro-Scholarship' within these publications? and How is this an accessible and assessable practice for workshop participants? To engage in Micro-Scholarship. Achieve Scholarship goals and outcomes. To walk the path of a Scholar. In a Community of Practice.
- examine tools and platforms - both analogue (e.g. meetings and conferences; journals) and digital (online), and networks - examine network theory
workshop participants both ask questions, engage in discussion, and then individual reflection and sharing of what they use, and why - to share ideas, get feedback, capture reflection - how they take note(s), make notes, and share notes - then progressively share and 'publish' these notes - as presentations (intradepartmental and then external meetings), and eventually submit for consideration as conference presentations, exhibits and 'posters', and journal publications (full spectrum - from letters to the editor, commentaries, reflection pieces, reviews, innovation reports, and 'research' and experimental reports)
- finally examine challenges and barriers to engaging in Micro-Scholarship, and Scholarship - e.g. finding time, making time, building routines and habitual practices, finding and engaging a Community of Practice (CoP), building confidence and conviction, creating and refining content - taking note, making notes and sharing notes, and making this practice public, publishing (with digital tools and on digital platforms and networks) and getting published
- end session with takeaways, and what participants found helpful and useful, and planning next steps (sharing and discussion), closing comments

Faculty/Facilitator Sharing
Poh-Sun: I believe conversations about (the core ideas) and practices in this area converge on three key issues 1) professional identity - becoming and being 'an Educator', to answer the question of what and who 'is' an Educator; 2) engaging in Conversations with a Community of Practice, 3) adding to these conversations and 'finding your voice' as an Educator - through increasingly confident, and impactful contributions, including public demonstration and display of your (and your teams and collaborators) work through writing and publication of this work, which is not only 'peer reviewed', but also read by members of a Community of Practice, cited in ongoing conversations, and in further and future publications and writing by members of your professional Community of Practice (CoP).
You will, and we do, engage in topics, and activities that interest us, that we want to develop and deepen our expertise and insights in, through exposure, practice and engagement within a CoP. 'Researching' a topic involves 'reading' more about a field, a topic, a practice. Raising awareness or 'seeing'. Then engaging with ideas and practices. 'Doing' the work. Skilling up. Reflecting on the process and outcomes and getting training and feedback. Then, with increasing confidence, finding 'our voice' and publicly demonstrating and displaying our work. Including through presentation and writing. And through teaching and training others. See (one), Do (one), Teach (others), Reflect, Engage in Ongoing Conversations, Teach and Write (engage in Scholarship).
In a nutshell, becoming, being, and engaging a CoP. Through ongoing conversations, demonstrations and publications (writing). Taking small steps, then bigger strides. Micro-Scholarship is simply the small, increasingly significant and public steps taken on the journey of Scholarship (as public engagement, conversations, practice and writing).
With each iterative step - confidence in message(s) and content, quality of this content, and most importantly its (potential) value and impact, for an audience, and topic gets progressively refined and improved upon - https://microscholarship.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-process-of-micro-scholarship.html

"Simply put, 'Micro-Scholarship' involves - Taking note, Making Notes, sharing these Notes, refining and building on these Notes through iterative conversations, feedback and personal reflection, then Assembling these Notes, into larger pieces of work. Of Scholarship." - Poh-Sun Goh, 17 August 2022, Wednesday, 0542am, Singapore Time
