Starting the Scholarship Cycle - With daily draft Blogposts, SlideShare and Instagram posts
Poh-Sun Goh, 12 October 2020 @ 0703am

The Scholarship Cycle (for me), often starts with an initial daily draft Blogpost, SlideShare and Instagram post. I generally develop each initial blogpost further at regular intervals. An extreme example is for up to a year in the lead up to a scheduled invited conference 'plenary or keynote presentation' or closing 'Pecha Kucha' where the blog, like a work in progress 'painting', gets gradually and progressively refined. The other extreme is a quick sketch on back of 'envelope' or napkin. BlogpostsInstagramSlideShare single slide posts are wonderful ways of capturing ideas, for later sharing via hyperlinks.

As a 'digital scholar', I use initial blogposts as open access 'bulletin boards', to share thoughts, invite feedback, as (the) material (and building blocks) for further online, hybrid and live discussions; then collaborative workshops and symposia, as well as conference presentations; and finally as peer reviewed journal publications. The Scholarship Cycle progressively and iteratively completes and repeats itself, adding to, and expanding a digital portfolio of academic work.

Micro-Scholarship Tools and Platforms - Purpose, Fit for Purpose (Accessibility, Usability and Ease of Use)

'Blogging (by using Blogger platform), SlideShare and Instagram are free to use (accessible), easy to use, tools and platforms which enable creating, and curating (with attribution) digital content, and open digital practice. With text, illustrations, multimedia (audio and video), including embedding links to online content, with each blogpost (on Blogger), SlideShare and Instagram post all having unique URL links, which can be accessed, shared, and embedded on multiple digital communication and sharing platforms, including posted on digital repositories, and forming the basic building blocks for education and training activities, scholarship, and components of a professional portfolio.' - Poh-Sun Goh, 5 February 2022, 0105am, Singapore Time

on topic of 'signing off' each comment, reflection or digital post

> this practice of 'signing off' also makes each, a potential output of 'Micro-Scholarship' - public open digital practice, amongst peers (for comment, feedback, and 'peer input or review'), on platforms (networks, meetings, societies and associations) - Poh-Sun Goh, 12 February 2022, 0535am, Singapore Time

"Connect the dots, by first placing and making dots."

➡ don't worry about connecting dots, there needs to be dots (up there) to be connected first !
➡ dots = ideas, questions, 'micro-assets'
➡ regarding value-add and relevance, consider this - from 2 viewpoints
- 1) ground up, on the ground ideas, challenges and concerns reflect (deep) personal, and hyper-local relevant issues - ask what are underlying broader principles (so many mental models and tools that can be applied, and frames of reference - which are relevant, how can these be applied locally, then local case study generalised for wider audience - this is fundamental premise of scholarly practice [practice informed by theory and published work] becoming (peer reviewed) scholarship
- 2) top down - take idea, theory, practice, model (which has been applied elsewhere, has been published) and customised this for local practice
[these activities are supported by 'design thinking', 'action research', 'innovation science'

Micro-(stackable)-ProfessionalSkillsTraining works best for continuing professional development - postgraduate, post-Masters; not at undergraduate level - when foundational knowledge and skills are absent - large body of literature from mastery training and deliberate practice - in professions, sports, arts, music - this is the difference between 'professionals' and 'week-end' or 'recreational' practice - elite performers and crafts(men and women) and other hobbyists. Achieving Competency, Proficiency and Mastery requires 'Time on Task', reflective practice, with feedback, ideally working alongside, and 'with' Master practitioners (under a Training, Supervision, Guiding, Mentoring and Ultimately Coaching process and paradigm) - Poh-Sun Goh, 11 March 2022, 0212am, Singapore Time

"Sustained 'Micro-Learning' (by taking small steps) and 'Micro-Scholarship' (by making small pieces), with persistent, cumulative effort, practice and output, under a mastery training and deliberate practice paradigm, over a long enough period of study, training and apprenticeship, will eventually lead to 'Macro-Learning', and 'Macro-Scholarship', progressing from 'surface' to 'deep' learning, by doing the 'deep work'." - Poh-Sun Goh, 11 March 2022, 0652am, Singapore Time.

One key question - when engaging in Micro-Scholarship - is to critically examine, and reflect on whether and how best to publicly display Micro-Content, curated, created and cultivated, for peer review, and choose a platform, and process than can easily scale up to established forms of Macro-Scholarship - e.g. the peer reviewed journal paper, conference presentation and poster, and invited presentation. Arguably blogging, and blogging platforms, translates and transfers easiest to a journal 'paper', SlideShare and Instagram to a conference poster or presentation.
